A two-dimensional particle tracking model for pollution dispersion in A Coruna and Vigo Rias (NW Spain) ArchiMer
Gomez-gesteira, M; Montero, P; Prego, R; Taboada, Jj; Leitao, P; Ruiz-villarreal, M; Neves, R; Perez-villar, V.
A two-dimensional hydrodynamic model coupled to a particle tracking model is applied to study the dispersion processes and residence time in two Galician rias (A Coruna and Vigo, NW Spain) under summer conditions. In A Coruna a long residence time was found in the harbour area due to the existence of a dock, and a short one in the river area. On the contrary, in Vigo, the residence time is smaller in the harbour area, due to the Rande Strait, beyond which the river effect is negligible.

Hydrography of the Artabro Gulf in summer: Western coastal limit of Cantabrian seawater and wind-induced upwelling at Prior Cape ArchiMer
Prego, R; Varela, M.
The Artabro Gulf (1 500 km(2) north-west of the Iberian Peninsula) has been studied based on data obtained in August 1993, under typical summer meteorological conditions (COPLA 893 cruise). This is the first study on the summer hydrography of the Artabro Gulf. During this season, the hydrography of this area is quite complex and must be understood in terms of three factors: 1) upwelling, 2) two different eastern North Atlantic Central Water (ENACW) water masses and 3) rias water exchange. A local wind-induced upwelling of ENACW, (subpolar) occurs off Prior Cape. The plume is located off the gulf coastline, but inside the continental shelf. The frontal zone, rich in nutrients and chlorophyll, is parallel to the gulf line, starting in the Prior region and...

Nutrient fluxes to the Bay of Biscay from Cantabrian rivers (Spain) ArchiMer
Prego, R; Vergara, J.
Nutrient fluxes to the Bay of Biscay from the Cantabrian basin have been quantified for the first time. Data between 1981 and 1995 of the main 16 Cantabrian rivers from the COCA monitoring programme have been used. Values of water flow and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), phosphate and silicate concentrations have been taken. Equations are proposed to quantify the fluvial nutrient contributions to the Cantabrian Sea. The annual average of continental outputs to the Bay of Biscay from the Cantabrian basin is 16.1 x 10(9) m(3) of freshwater, 1.0 x 10(9) mol of N in DIN, 0.062 x 10(9) mol of phosphate and 1.2 x 10(9) mol of silicate. In comparison with the French rivers, those of the Cantabrian have small fluxes and their outflow is very disperse, not...

On the distribution of silicic acid as a frontal zone tracer in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean ArchiMer
Prego, R; Park, Yh; Barciela, Mc; Morvan, J; Poncin, J; Treguer, P.
The subantarctic frontal zone surveyed during the April-May 1991 SUZIL cruise in the Crozet-Kerguelen Amsterdam area shows a strong horizontal (north to south) gradient of dissolved silicate, increasing with depth, from 5 to 10 mu molSi kg(-1) at 100 m, and 10 to 70 mu molSi kg(-1) at 600 m. The northern limit of this frontal zone, which is formed by the confluence of the Subtropical and Subantarctic Fronts, is delimited at the surface by the 2 mu molSi kg(-1) silicate isoline. Silicate-salinity diagrams also allow different water regimes to be positioned relative to the frontal zone. This sloping interface is between two water bodies, one to the north with more saline subtropical waters of less concentrated silicate than the southern one, corresponding to...
